Sustainability is embedded in everything we do – from the lab to your skin, and back to the earth.

As global skincare consumption continues to grow, it is time to think more carefully about the environmental impact of the products we use every day. Too often, sustainability in skincare is considered one step at a time, focusing on packaging, ingredients or recycling without looking at the product as a whole.

We believe skincare should be designed with its entire life cycle in mind, with the ambition of minimising environmental impact without compromising performance or safety. That’s why we consider every step: from how ingredients are produced, to how formulations are manufactured, packaged, shipped, used and disposed of.

Our approach is based on science, life cycle thinking and continuous improvement – not assumptions or greenwashing.

As part of our mission to advance sustainability, we also aim to educate consumers on more environmentally conscious skincare practices. Through our blog, Bionotes, we share insights on sustainability, ingredients and skin health.

Our approach to sustainability in skincare

Ingredients

Our products are based on biotechnology-derived ingredients with high efficacy and a lower environmental impact than conventional ingredients.

Our formulations include bioactive enzymes and other biotechnology-derived ingredients produced in controlled conditions using microorganisms such as bacteria, yeast and fungi, rather than extracting raw materials directly from nature or relying on petrochemical production.

We have in-house scientists and conduct extensive research, including life cycle assessment in collaboration with scientists at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability (DTU Biosustain) in Denmark. We evaluate each ingredient across its life cycle – before, during and after use – considering how it is produced, the resources required, its role in the formulation and what happens to it after use.

All ingredients in our products are 100% biodegradable. All formulations are unisex, vegan, fragrance-free, dermatologically approved for sensitive skin and allergy-certified. Explore the full ingredient lists on each product page.

Manufacturing

Our products are formulated and manufactured in Denmark alongside skincare experts and experienced professional swith a strong focus on quality and sustainability.

The facility operates under GMP-compliant standards and has expertise in both pharmaceutical and cosmetic manufacturing. Its quality assurance setup includes qualified personnel such as pharmacists and laboratory technicians, while all production employees receive thorough and ongoing training within their area of specialisation. This provides a high level of competence and quality control throughout the manufacturing process. The facility uses recycled process water and has upgraded to energy-efficient lighting, helping reduce resource and energy use.

We work with flexible, small-batch production, which helps minimise raw material waste and avoid unnecessary overproduction while supporting controlled production and consistent product quality.

We continuously look for opportunities to minimise the environmental impact of our production without compromising product quality or safety.

Packaging

Our products come in 100% biodegradable jars and bottles made using materials produced from fermented microorganisms. The material is OK compost HOME-certified and designed to biodegrade under home-composting conditions within approximately 52 weeks.

This means we don’t use conventional plastic, including recyclable plastic that may not be recycled in practice, or glass, which is significantly heavier to transport.

Our outer packaging consists of paper bags and cardboard boxes made from FSC®-certified paper from responsibly managed forests. Our paper bags can also be reused as gift bags, eliminating the need for additional gift packaging. Explore our packaging here.

Shipping and Distribution

We also consider the environmental impact of how our products are shipped. We use reused and recycled boxes wherever possible, extending the life of existing packaging and avoiding unnecessary new materials.

As Bioli grows, we will continue to assess our logistics, shipping materials and distribution practices with the aim of minimising environmental impact.
