Bioactive Enzyme Technology

Bioactive enzyme technology forms the core of Bioli skincare. With enzymes brought to life through biotechnology, we create skincare that reflects our belief that all products should be formulated for sensitive skin, making them suitable for all skin types, while considering the environment by default.

+ BioProtect

BioProtect is a bioactive enzyme technology featuring Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) derived from Saccharomyces cerevisiae, alongside activity-enhancing ingredients. It delivers high-level antioxidant protection against environmental stressors, including free radicals, and provides anti-inflammatory benefits to help calm and soothe the skin.

Skin impact

  • Protects against free radicals and oxidative stress.
  • Delivers targeted antioxidant activity, particularly suited to sensitive skin.
  • Provides anti-inflammatory benefits to help calm and soothe the skin.

BioProtect is a biotech alternative to vitamin B3, vitamins C and E, and green tea extracts. Our research highlights potential challenges associated with these conventional alternatives, including pH alterations, irritation at high concentrations, and allergenic effects in sensitive skin.

Environmental impact

A preliminary life cycle assessment (LCA), conducted for Bioli in collaboration with The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability (DTU Biosustain), indicates that producing enzyme-based antioxidants requires fewer resources than a vitamin C-based antioxidant reference, with lower environmental impacts across 17 of the 18 categories assessed* including:

– 30% less land use
– 80% less CO2
– 80% less energy (fossil resource)
– 100% biodegradable

*Comparison: 1% Superoxide Dismutase versus a 15% vitamin C reference. The selected concentrations represent typical usage levels for achieving the intended effects. Biodegradability is documented separately from the LCA.

+ BioRefine

BioRefine is a bioactive enzyme technology featuring two enzymes, protease and lipase, derived from microorganisms, alongside activity-enhancing ingredients. It delivers effective cleansing with optional gentle exfoliation. Protease helps remove dead skin cells, while lipase breaks down excess sebum. With brief use, BioRefine acts as a cleanser; when left on the skin longer, it provides gentle exfoliation.

Skin impact

  • Effectively cleanses the skin by breaking down excess sebum and impurities.
  • Gently removes dead skin cells to improve skin smoothness and texture.
  • Provides controlled, gentle exfoliation, particularly suited to sensitive skin.

BioRefine is a biotech alternative to AHAs, BHAs and physical exfoliants. Our research highlights potential challenges associated with these conventional exfoliants, including irritation, dryness and increased skin sensitivity. Unlike acid-based or physical exfoliants, BioRefine uses enzymes to gently break down dead skin cells without abrasive particles or exfoliating acids.

Environmental impact

A preliminary life cycle assessment (LCA), conducted for Bioli in collaboration with The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability (DTU Biosustain), indicates that producing enzyme-based exfoliants requires fewer resources than an AHA/BHA-based exfoliant reference, with lower environmental impacts across all 18 categories assessed* including:

– 60% less land use
– 90% less CO2
– 90% less energy (fossil resource)
– 100% biodegradable

*Comparison: 1% protease versus a 22% AHA/BHA reference. The selected concentrations represent typical usage levels for achieving the intended effects. Biodegradability is documented separately from the LCA.
